According to inscriptions on the reverse of the painting the self-portrait was painted when Chalmers became an Associate. See also letter from Kay to RSA dated 1937-07-09 in archive box 'Letters from old 1928 file, gifts and bequests" "I have now put out the two small por/traits of Geo P. Chalmers which I prop/osed to you for the Academy. They are/ very small.. The earlier one, when he was an Associate....the other/ later, is a self portrait & more staid/ as befits a full member".
