The Day after the Fair
Artist: Nicol, Erskine, RSA · 1825-1904
Erskine Nicol produced a painting entitled 'Donnybrooke Fair' in the same year as the Diploma Work. It is probable that the Diploma Work relates in theme to this painting which is now in the Tate Gallery. Information supplied by Dr Claudia Kinmonth in 2003. In a report by W.B. Johnstone to Board of Trustees of 23 March 1863 (NAS, NG6/7/30) there is a reference to 'The Day at the Fair' in relation to students copying works in the NGS "Mr Erskine Nicol has written to the Curator stating that a picture by him, 377 'The Day after the Fair' which was copied by one of the students , has been passed off as an original, not perhpas by the artist who made the copy, but by some third party, who acquired it'.
