This painting was produced as a result of the artist's travels in Japan for 3 months in 1990. When Paul Furneaux exhibited again at the RSA in the exhibition "If I could Go Anywhere...Alastair Salvesen Art Scholarship, The 15 Scholarship Winners 1989 - 2003' he provided the following comments on his work 'I ...exhibited looser abstract and semi-abstract watercolourson Japanese paper. These were made in Japan, when a Japanese artist I met by/ chance invited me to use one of his studios. They were made in direct/ response to the papers, brushes and pigments readily available there."
