This study relates to the finished painting 'The Traitor's Gate' in the NGS (NG 843) The painting was also known as 'The Duke of Gloster entering the Water-gate of Calais' (see John Gray 'David Scott RSA and His Works' 1884, page 26) The SNPG have a 1957 negative of this wash study (B/ 3751)
