Portrait of Sir Frank Mears PPRSA
Artist: Cowie, James, RSA LLD · 1886-1956
The portrait is of the out-going President of the Royal Scottish Academy, the distinguished architect Sir Frank Mears and was acquired as his official Presidential portrait.
Mears is depicted wearing the robes, velvet cap and Presidential medal which denote his office.
In the background are views of two arched bridges. These are the old and new Invermoriston bridges near Loch Ness.
The original double-arched stone bridge across the River Moriston was constructed by the Scottish engineer Thomas Telford in 1813, and took 8 years to build.
In 1933 work on a new bridge which mirrors the design and materials of the original was constructed to the designs of [Sir] Frank C Mears RSA. The new bridge runs adjacent to the old bridge and both have become a tourist attraction.
