Gardenstown
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
Gillies visited MacDuff and the Banffshire coast in 1932 and probably also visited the fishing village of Gardenstown then.
The present oil is one of two in the RSA Collections which take a near identical view of this subject but which are painted in very different styles.
This version is more refined and finished in its handling, compared to the more expressionistic handling of the other version.
