Artist: Hill, David Octavius, RSA · 1802-1870

David Octavius Hill was one of the most prominent Academicians of the 19th century. Alongside his skills as a painter, his pioneering work in early photography with Robert Adamson ensured his place in history.

This spectacular Turneresque landscape of a sunset over D O Hill’s home town of Perth is believed to be the same work that was exhibited by the artist in the RSA Annual Exhibition of 1855. Its acquisition in 2014 marked the beginning of an exciting period of collections development and a landmark annex to the RSA’s unique Diploma Collection.
