Bathhouse vs Brothel
Artist: Ross, Heather · b. 1983
The watercolour shows an architecturally styled aerial view of a building or man-made structure that has been abstracted and the scale experimented with.
The top third is purely in pencil while the middle third is executed in watercolour of a predominantly pink colour. The lower third is characterised by drip marks where the watercolour has been allowed to run down the paper and bleed along the bottom edge.
The subject matter was inspired by the artist's trip to Japan as winner of the 2010 Alastair Salvesen Travel Scholarship.
The work was not exhibited in the Salvesen exhibition, ‘Heather Ross: Constants in Practice’, at the Royal Scottish Academy, 29 June – 26 July 2011. However the work deals with the same themes that were explored in the show and relates directly to her travels in Japan during the Salvesen scholarship.
