Printer: unknownPublisher: Colnaghi & Co, MessrsPrimary artist: Smith, Colvin, RSA · 1796-1875Publisher: Lupton, Thomas Goff · 1791-1873

Smith's original oil is a full elngth seated portrait of which only the head and shoulders have been taken for the mezzotint. It was not exhibited and is now in the collection of Angus Council (Acc no. B1978.16) and hangs in the Mechanic's Institute, Brechin. In a letter to his sister of 1821-10-24 written from Panmure, Smith wrote that he was busy; "painting and shooting alternately, my picture I hope to finish this week and am glad to say that it pleases everybody so much that Mr Maule has agreed to let me have an engraving taken from it."(quoted by Colvin-Smith, Robert C Molison in The Life and Works of Colvin Smith RSA, Aberdeen University Press, 1939, p2)

William Maule of Panmure wrote to Colvin Smith from Panmure 1821-10-26; Sir, I think it would rather look ostentatious were I to put down my name as a subscriber to a print of myself, but I will take fifty proof copies , sub rosa, if that will answer your purpose, the inscription on it should be; The Honble. William Maule of Panmure, M.P., Patron and President of the Forfarshire Agricultural Association. I am not vain enough to imagine the print will sell in London and therefore think you should send it directly to Brechin and other towns in this district. I am now busy getting my pictures arranged at Brechin Castle and moved from hence and hope t obe lucky in the way of hanging them up. Iam, dear Sir, yours faithfully, William Maule." (quoted by Colvin-Smith, Robert C Molison in The Life and Works of Colvin Smith RSA, Aberdeen University Press, 1939, p2)
