Sir John Watson Gordon's original oil was exhibited under the title The Hon Lord Murray, one of the Senators of the College of Justice in Scoltand at the RA Annual Exhibition in 1857 (cat.363) and exhibited next under the title Portrait of the Honourable Lord Murray at the RSA Annual Exhibition in 1858, cat.238 where it was hung in the Great Room. It was gifted by the sitter to the NGS in 1861 and subsequently transferred to the SNPG (PG 1006)
