Gordon's original painting was commissioned by a group of the sitter's friends and neighbours at Rolleston-on-Dove in Staffordshire to mark Mosley's 77th birthday in March 1862. £600 was raised and after the payment of 330 guineas for the painting and frame, enabling each of the 11 members of the organising committee and the 50 subscribers to receive a copy of the mezzorint print of the painting
