Portrait of Emma
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
One of a number of portraits executed by Gillies of his youngest sister, Emma Gillies, who studied ceramics at Edinburgh College of Art.
She is depicted here aged 20 or 21 years old.
The portrait is in marked contrast to another of her, wearing a white necklace, painted eleven years later (G.1991.079) which depicts her looking thin and downcast.
Emma died in 1936 a month short of her thirty-sixth birthday.
