Soden and Keller describe this work as having; "the density of construction reminiscent of Gauguin." (Soden and Keller, William Gillies, Canongate, 1998, p.128), In particular the composition and handling are very reminiscent of Gauguin's landscapes of Pont Avon, whilst the picket fence as a prominent motif recurs in several of his later Tahitian works also.
