Emma with a White Necklace
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
One of at least two known oil portraits of the artist's younger sister Emma wearing this same white necklace.
She appears thinner and less vibrant than in the double portrait of her and her elder sister Janet of seven years earlier (G.1991.547).
The painting was executed at the Gillies' family home, 162 Willowbrae Road, Edinburgh the year before they moved to Temple Cottage at Temple in Midlothian.
