A Tonic for the Mind
The image is based on the floor plan of a labyrinth.
The most famous of these, and possibly the inspiration for the present work, is that set into the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France, the only surviving medieval nave labyrinth.
Its exact purpose is not known. It may have served as a means to confuse and discourage Death and evil from entering the building, the circuitous pathway confusing their normal straight lines of travel.
It has also been suggested that it served pilgrims or the clergy of the cathedral who would walk its path in contemplation and silence.
The title of the present work suggests an awareness of and affinity with this latter suggestion.
