The painting was made in response to, and included in, EGO, an exhibition of self portraits from the RSA collections, curated by Sandy Wood, RSA Collections Curator. Alan was invited to make a contemporary work in response to the exhibition and this painting was the resulting work. The painting was created over the course of one day in the exhibition while it was open to the public. The artist brought in a skeleton, easel and mirror and set up with John Bellany’s Self Portrait 2 (1997.188) over his shoulder. On completion, the portrait was displayed in the exhibition and following the close of the exhibition it was gifted to the RSA. Images of the artist creating the work in the exhibition are held in the EGO exhibition file.
