Dava Targe

Dava Moor is close to Culloden (it has been cleared but there are little trees regenerating here and there across it). A Targe was a Jacobean shield used at the Battle of Culloden. Dava Targe part of a group of works made following a Residency run by Highland Art near Culloden battlefield. The artist was wrestling with internal questions of what war is and what it is for, in tandem with what she was seeing in the environment. Work centred on landscape around Culloden, which is a combination of planted forests and moorland. Nodules are randomly placed and represent trees coming up in moorland. Texture left over from chisel marks and when carving slate a great tonal range can be achieved; the markings are there to emphasise the forms.
