La Culla
Artist: Herdman, Robert Inerarity, RSA · 1829-1888
Although the canvas is signed 1864, the painting was accepted as Herdman's Diploma Work in 1863 although it was seen to be unfinished at that point. Reference in RSA Council Minutes of 1863-11-11 'Mr Herdman's Picture La Culla (yet unfinished)/ was exhibited to the Council, and in consideration of his misapprehension/ regarding the law and his undertaking to finish the picture/ before next February, they unanimously approved of the same/ as his Diploma Picture'. Presumably the date must have been added on completion of the work in 1864. Reference in RSA Council Minutes 1863-11-11. In 1863 a similarly themed painting 'A Fountain Scene - South Italy' was exhibited at the RA by Herdman.
It would appear that there was another version of the Diploma Work painting - in 1865 'The Cradle - South Italy' was lent to the RGI by James Cowan Esq, Edinburgh. This painting was listed by name ["La Culla"] in the advertisement for the sale of Cowan's Collection [James Cowan Esq of Glengorm] in Dowell's Rooms, 18 George Street Edinburgh on 1896-02-22 [The Glasgow herald, 1896-02-17].
