Jeanie Deans and the Robbers
Artist: Duncan, Thomas, ARA RSA · 1807-1845
This painting is one of many Sir Walter Scott inspired works that Duncan produced throughout his career. He exhibited a number of works inspired by "The Heart of Midlothian". In 1831 the year that he deposited his Diploma Work he exhibited "Jeanie Deans and the robbers - finished sketch" catalogue number 301, this may have been the same piece as the Diploma Work. Scenes from the novel "The Heart of Midlothian" were popular with other Scottish artists at this time including Duncan's contemporary Robert Scott Lauder RSA, who exhibited "The Trial of Effie Deans" at the RSA in 1842.
