St Andrews Church, Rothesay, Isle of Bute
Architect: Fairlie, Reginald Francis Joseph, RSA · 1883-1952
The church depicted in the Diploma Work is one of thirty two Roman Catholic Churches that Reginald Fairlie designed during his career. In 1928 a similarly titled piece to the Diploma Work was exhibited at the RGI "St Andrew's Church, Rothesay" catalogue number 736, this was the same year that the Diploma Work was exhibited at the RSA and it may be that the piece exhibited at the RGI was also the Diploma Work. In 1929 "St Andrew's Catholic Church, Rothesay" was exhibited at the RA catalogue number 1247. In 1953 a similarly titled piece was exhibited as part of a memorial display at the RSA "St Andrews Catholic Church, Rothesay" catalogue number 377. This may have been the same piece as the Diploma Work and it may be that the Diploma Work was selected at this exhibition (see acquisition/ pedigree).
