Mariannecci’s original watercolour copy from which this print was made is unsigned and was made in 1865. It measures 61.0 x 45.7 cm (H x W). It is in the collections of the Fine Art Department, University of Leeds
Bazzi’s masterpieces are the cycle of frescoes relating to St.Catherine of Siena in the churchof S.Domenico, Siena which also contains her head (cased in a bronze bust) and her thumb. Her body is buried in Rome. She was made a Saint by Pope Pius II (formerly Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, who was also from Siena – vide 2014.474 for an Arundel Society print of him being made a cardinal). St.Catherine (b.1347-03-25, Siena, d.1380-04-29, Rome) was named as one of Italy’s two Patron Saints, alongside St Francis of Assisi, on 18 June1939.
