[creator]: Thomson of Duddingston, John, Rev, HRSA · 1778-1840[creator]: Allan, David · 1744-1796
Thomson was responsible for painting the landscape
Allan was responsible for painting the foreground figures according to a label on the verso, however for this to be true Thomson must have been a highly gifted artist as he would just have been a teenager, he was only 18 when Allan died. The 1883 catalogue of the RSA Collection gives an alternative explanation; "The appearance of this picture suggests that it was the joint production of Thomson and his wife. She was by nature very fond of art; and her friends asking how on earth she could have married Thomson - she was rich - were answered, "Oh, they drew together.""
