Duncan Macmillan in his catalogue essay for the 1984 Talbot Rice Gallery exhibition Walter Geikie (1795-1837) Scottish Life and Character, identifies this as the first work of art in which the artisitc output of a child is seen to be appreciated and taken seriously by adults. The print is partly autobiographical as Geikie as a young child would draw with chalk on any flat surface available to him in or near his home.
