The artist and engraver, the Frenchman Israel Sylvestre was in Italy c.1640, and again possibly in 1643/44 and 1653. He was settled in Paris from 1659.

All bar two (nos .51 and .52) were originally published by P. Mariette, which could be Pierre Mariette I (b.c.1603, d.1657) or his son Pierre Mariette II (b.1634, d. 1716) the latter being described on the BM webste as “the greatest publisher of the century.” Pierre Mariette II married the widow of fellow printer, printmaker and print publisher Francois Langlois in 1655, becoming in the process the step-father of Nicolas Langlois I (b.1640, d.1703) whose own son, Nicolas Langlois II (b.c.1670, d.1707) appears to be the publisher of nos .51 and .52
Most of the prints are on wove paper watermarked J Whatman 1808. This is the date given for the publication
