Kirkcudbright under Snow

Artist: Oppenheimer, Charles, RSA · 1875-1961

In a letter from Oppenheimer to the RSA dated 1934-02-16 he states that "I shall do my utmost to/ be able to submit to the Council/ later on, a painting to some/ extent worthy of the importance/ of the occasion..." (letter in Opppenheimer's deceased member file.) There is an identical view to the Diploma Work of Kirkcudbright in summer entitled "The Tolbooth, Kirkcudbright" by Oppenheimer in the collection of the Dick Institute, Kilmarnock. In 1935 a painting entitled 'Kirkudbright sous la neige' was exhibited at the Societe des Artistes Francais catalogue number 1748. This may be the same piece as the Diploma Work but by this time it was in the RSA collection. There is a painting in the collection of East Ayrshire Council (The Dick Institute, Kilmarnock) by Oppenheimer 'From a Tower, Kirkcudbright' (oil on canvas, undated) which depicts an identical view to the Diploma Work but appears to be a summer scene. A similar (summer) composition is in the collection of manchester City Art Gallery, which may be apreparatory study for that in the Dick. The viewpoint of the present work would tally with the artist having been on the tower ontop of the Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court House building on the north side of the high Street and the view depicted is looking slightly south-west from there.
