A mounted jockey looking over his shoulder
Artist: Howe, James · 1780-1836
The location of the horse race of which this jockey was a part is not recorded. Horse racing at this time was taking place in at least 16 Scottish towns including Edinburgh. The races here were held from c.1504 until 1815 at Leith and thereafter to the present at Musselburgh. The Leith and subsequently Musselburgh courses would have been closest to Howe's Edinburgh home. Another venue was the North Inch of Perth and one of the related sketches in Perth Museum and Art Gallery is inscribed Perth Races (vide John Burnet "The Sites and Landscapes of Horse Racing in Scotland before 1860" in The Sports Historian, Vol 18, No 1, May 1998, pp55-75 inc.)
