Rough Studies for Valley Ranger
Artist: Fraser, Alexander [Sandy], RSA · 1940-2020
This painting belongs to the period in the nineteen eighties when the artist was concentrating on more abstract compositions. From the early nineteen nineties he has returned to a representational style of painting with more emphasis on the figure. In 1985, the year that this painting was created Alexander Fraser had exhibited related drawings at the RSA Annual Exhibition, for example catalogue number 145 "Drawings for valley ranger". In a letter from the artist to the RSA dated 2003-09-09 he explains that the Diploma Work "was one of a series of drawings" which explored images for inclusion in larger paintings." (letter in hanging file "Articles on Painters"). In a phonecall to Sandy Wood on 04/10/2012 Sandy Fraser said part of the inspiration for the painting came from his footprints in acrylic paint that were on the areas of canvas in his studio. He then used these in the painting and worked them up from this background.
