The Mr Hutton referred to was George Henry Hutton (d.1827) an English born professional soldier with a keen interest in ecclesiastical antiquities. He is acknowledged in the opening pages of Grose’s The Antiquities of Scotland as one of those who lent their original drawings to Grose to copy. An extensive collection of Hutton’s original drawings, notebooks and correspondence is in the NLS. It includes a detailed pencil study of this exact viewpoint (Hutton drawings on line digital database)
