The photograph is one from a series of photographs which Thorburn took of artist members of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in their studios.

They were first exhibited together in an exhibition titled "Artists in Residence" which ran concurrently with the RGI's Annual Exhibition in Glasgow's McLellan Galleries in 1995.
