Beach Closed
Sculptor: Stiven, Charles, RSA · b. 1960
The artist has written of this piece;
"‘Beach Closed’ is one of a large series of ongoing works using architectural model making and the motif of the ‘kiosk’ to metaphorically comment on aspects of contemporary societal circumstance.
This particular work, utilizing an archetypal ‘beach kiosk’ situated amongst a swell of coastal detritus, reflects on the ongoing effects of consumption and pollution, hinting at an increasing dysfunctional environment.
The inclusion of the defensive beach barbed wire also alludes to both an irrelevant but populist ‘Dad’s army’ nostalgia, and quietly at aspects of exclusion relating to migration and the plight of the refugee."
