Porca Quay
Printmaker: Fleming, Ian, RSA, Dr · 1906-1994
Fleming had an eye for finding something visually interesting even amongst less salubrious surroundings. In this the present work traces a lineage in his work to etchings which he made in Glasgow during the 1920s and 30s.
Porca Quay depicts an area of that name at the village of Footdee [Fittie] near Aberdeen Harbour; looking East towards the disappearing North Quay. It is a doric corruption of Powcreek which was the name of one of two burns which entered the harbour near this point.
At the left old dwellings with fishing nets behind stand on the road known as Porca Quay. Two fishermen stand to left of centre before the gable of a building which backs onto the Customs House (now the Silver Darlings Restaurant), at right of centre behind metal railings stands the obelisk Footdee War Memorial, and behind it the distinctive octagonal harbour lighthouse with its cantilevered extension over the harbour to the right.
