Illustrations to St John's 'Natural History and Sport in Moray'
Artist: Reid, George, Sir, PPRSA RSA HRHA · 1841-1913
The portfolio comprises ten proof etchings [heliogravures] on paper by Sir George Reid PPRSA of landscapes and historic buildings in Morayshire.
The subjects were sketched in situ in 1880, half of them being dated between 31 August and 6 September 1880, and published as etchings in 1881.
They were commissioned by David Douglas, the Edinburgh publisher to form some of the 38 full plate illustrations plus frontis and etched title page, to Charles William St John's (1809-1856) book 'Natural History and Sport in Moray.'
Originally published posthumously by another publisher in 1863 without illustrations, Douglas' second edition [1882] was noted for the inclusion of the illustrations by Reid and the English natural history illustrator John Wycliffe Taylor (1859-1925), with supplementary sketches within the text by the author.
This was one of several publications which were illustrated by Reid prior to his election as President of the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture & Architecture.
