Addison drew his inspiration from buildings and scenes in and around his adopted Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Grammar School was founded in c.1256 and moved to its present location, shown in this print, in 1863. Between 1970 and 1977 the school was renamed Rubislaw Academy before reverting to its original name.

The interior of the building was destroyed by fire in 1986 with the Library (containing notebooks associated with Lord Byron, arguably the school's most famous former pupil and whose statue graces the facade) and trophy room amongst the more prominent casualties.

The school is a state school with a catchment area like any other secondary school in Scotland.

In addition to Byron other prominent figures who attended the school include Professor David Masson HRSA an early champion of women's suffrage, the author Eric Linklater, former British Foreign Secretary Rt Hon Robin Cook MP, and Arthur Watson PPRSA.

Watson was a pupil there at the same time as Ian Howard RSA and R Lennox Dunbar RSA and all were taught art by Charles Hemingway.

The prints were printed by Arthur Watson assisted by Donald Addison.
