Untitled Landscape with Buildings

Artist: Portsmouth, Percy Herbert, RSA · 1874-1953

Having resigned from his post at Edinburgh College of Art and asked to be moved to the list of Retired Academicians, around 1928-29 Portsmouth left Scotland. He and his wife settled in the village of Rushden in Hertfordshire, moving into an old half-timbered property of great character and charm with the distinctive name of "Young Loves."

His studio was in a large thatched detached building adjacent to the main house.

Best known as a sculptor, Portsmouth turned to painting as a means of relaxation and this work probably relates to later in his career after he had returned to England. The fact that he did paint is referenced in his Obituary notice which appeared in the RSA Annual Report for 1953; "As a recreation he painted in both watercolour and oils but seldom exhibited these works."
