Knox 's early works were much influenced by American Abstract Expressionism but latterly gave way to deceptively simple but highly studied still lives.

Latterly his work combined a balance between pastel drawings of particularly seascapes imbued with an incredible sense of lighting, as well as of still life groupings of objects which generally suggest a relaxed and leisurely outlook on life, as this work exemplifies.

Lithography lends itself perfectly to Knox's style and the surface texture is evocative of his pastel and conte drawings.

Knox first worked with Peacock Printmakers in Aberdeen, where the present work was printed, during his involvement as one of the artists invited to contribute several illustrations to the Scottish Bestiary, a copy of which, alongside several loose plates, is held in the RSA Collections.
