Cranes at Wandsworth
Printmaker: Reeves, Philip Thomas Langford, RSA PPRSW RGI RE · 1931-2017
One of a series of prints executed by reeves in his final year at the RCA in London and just prior to his moving to take up a teaching post at Glasgow School of Art.
His subject matter at this date was highly naturalistic and included "everyday" scenes of city life, often focussing as here on the unglamorous aspects of industrialisation and work.
These early works show little hint of the move towards abstraction which followed and which characterised much of Reeves' output for the larger part of his career., which also saw him forego traditional approaches to etching in favour of multi-plate prints, found objects, and less direct drawing and biting.
