This painting appears to be one of a number of works inspired by sand dunes that James Robertson was producing in the nineteen eighties. In 1989 the year that he deposited his Diploma Work he had exhibited a painting entitled "Dunes" at the RGI, catalogue number 77. The work does not focus on any particular geographical location and was a studio creation (artist confirmed this in a telephone call to the Collections Assistant, 2003-05-27)
