House Roots

Artist: Harrison, Kenzie

The artist was the recipient of an RSA John Kinross Travel Scholarship in 2023.

The present work suggests the artist's view of the importance of the built environment as a core element of community and society, and the fact that any city is composed of layers, both visible and invisible and and spanning the human community, the built environment and the histories, past, present and future, of the location.

These concepts appear here to be exemplified by the plant-like root structure which lies beneath the foundations of the otherwise ruined buildings depicted. The roots link them to the past, their ruins are their present state and in turn raise the potential of what they may be transformed into in the future.
