The photographer's identity is unknown but was probably an Edinburgh-based commercial photographer engaged by the Edinburgh School of Art.

Bose's figure was executed by him from the life during his time as a student at the Edinburgh School of Art, formerly the Trustees' Academy which met in the former Royal Institution Building on the Mound in Edinburgh.
