sketch of the Tomb of the Antipope John XXIII, Florence
Artist: Bose, Fanindra Nath, ARSA · 1888-1926
Bose was in Paris in the summer of 1911 and moved on from there to Rome in 1912. In both cities he executed a number of sketches of sculptures both ancient and more recent.
He is understood to also have visited Florence whilst in Italy however this appears to be an isolated sketch related to that city and it is possible that it was made whilst he was still in Paris possibly from a cast in the Louvre or in the Musee de la Sculpture Comparee in the Trocadero.
This specific piece is the tomb for the Antipope John XXIII (c.1360-1419) the original of which stands in the Baptistry of San Giovanni in Florence. It was executed in the 1420s by Donatello (c.1386-1466) and Michelozzo (1396-1472) the first of a number of pieces on which the pair collaborated.
