Bose was in Paris in the summer of 1911 and executed a number of sketches of sculptures both ancient and more recent.

Many of the former were sketches made in the Musee de la Sculpture Comparee at the Trocadero in Paris, or in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles nearby where the original relief depicted here is located.

The relief is the work of the seventeenth century sculptor Étienne Le Hongre and features in the decoration of the Cascade de l'allee d'eau on the parterre du Nord.
