Bose was in Paris in the summer of 1911 and executed a number of sketches of sculptures both ancient and more recent.
Many of the former were sketches made in the Musee de la Sculpture Comparee at the Trocadero in Paris, or in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles nearby where the original relief depicted in the top sketch here.
The relief by Phillippe de Buyster, was executed in 1684, and decorates the Pyramid Fountain, in the Palace of Versailles Gardens.
The lower sketch is of the stone statue of around 1520 of St Martha, holding her attribute, a bucket of holy water, from the interior of the Eglise de la Madeleine at Troyes.
