Bose was in Paris in the summer of 1911 and executed a number of sketches of sculptures both ancient and more recent.

Amongst these are a series of single figure statues from various French cathedrals. Their original presence in Bose's sketchbooks suggest that they were made from photographic reproductions or from copy casts, probably in the Musee de la Sculpture Comparee at the Trocadero in Paris rather than from the originals in situ.

The present work is a sketch of a 13th century statue of a standing robed woman, Eve, holding a serpent in the crook of her left arm, and which she is gently stroking, an apple held in the serpent's jaws, from Reims cathedral and now in the Musee du Tau, Reims.
