sketch of headless statue of standing woman holding a candlestick, Église Saint-Martin de Laon
Artist: Bose, Fanindra Nath, ARSA · 1888-1926
Bose was in Paris in the summer of 1911 and executed a number of sketches of sculptures both ancient and more recent.
Amongst these are a series of single figure statues from various French cathedrals. Their original presence in Bose's sketchbooks suggest that they were made from photographic reproductions or from copy casts, rather than from the originals in situ.
The present work is a sketch of a headless statue of a standing woman holding large book, at Église Saint-Martin de Laon and was probably made from a plaster cast of it in the Musee de la Sculpture Comparee in the Trocadero in Paris.
