Bose was in Paris in the summer of 1911 and executed a number of sketches of sculptures both ancient and more recent.

The present sketch was executed at the Musée du Luxembourg. The Kiss, commissioned by the French state, was located there from 1901 until 1919 when it was deposited at the Musée Rodin.
