Patrick enrolled at Glasgow School of Art in 1924. having earned some spare cash working at Glasgow Docks during the General Strike of may 1926, Patrick was able to finance a trip to Provence that summer where he visited Les Baux, Carcassonne, Avignon and Nimes. Also sketching in the area at the same time but unbeknown to each other was Maurice Greiffenhagen, the head of Painting and Drawing at GSA.
From the sketches executed on his travels Patrick produced oil paintings and a series of etchings following his return.
The present work reveals the influence of the English watercolourist Henry Rushbury. Haswell Miller, himself an able watercolourist who would go on to become Curator of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, was the husband of one of Patrick's tutors at GSA Josephine Haswell Miller. He happened to see some of Patrick's early attempts at watercolour, painted in the loose wet technique favoured by James Waterston Herald and Arthur Melville. Haswell Miller encouraged Patrick to search out the work of Rushbury instead.
