Untitled Shipping at Dundee with the Royal Arch beyond
Artist: Milne, John Maclauchlan Milne, RSA · 1885-1957
The scene depicted is no longer recognisable.
In 1964 to provide landfall for the approach and exit ramps to the new Tay Road Bridge the Royal, or Victoria Arch was dynamited and the rubble used to back-fill two harbour docks.
The Arch was erected between 1849 and 1852 to the design of the architect of the Wallace Monument at Stirling. It was erected to commemorate the visit to Dundee in 1844 of HM Queen Victoria and her Consort HRH Prince Albert; the first visit to Dundee by a reigning monarch since the 17th century.
The Arch stood in an area close to the present V&A Dundee building to the east of the Tay Road Bridge. During new roadworks in 2010 parts of the stonework were uncovered and its foundations were similarly unearthed in 2014.
