Vigo

The work depicts the Spanish fishing port of Vigo in Galicia. The distant hilltop reveals the fortifications of the Castelo do Castros built in 1665 to defend the port from regular bombardment by the British Royal Navy. The prominent twin towers to the right are from the façade of the collegiate Church of Santa Maria which was built in 1811 on the site of an earlier ecclesiastical structure.
It may be an unfinished sketch, with much of the city suggested only by blocks of laid-in colour washes.
