Florentine Shimmer
Artist: Warchol, Aleksandra · b. 1999
The piece was inspired by the artist's response to visual stimuli on her 2023 RSA John Kinross Scholarship to Italy.
Here she records Florence's famous River Arno with its ancient Ponte Vecchio, famed for the buildings which the bridge carries above its walkway, as seen in the dark of night.
The forms of the buildings on the opposite bank and of the bridge itself are created exclusively by the forms and positioning of the illuminated windows and the reflections in the river below.
At foreground left stands a young man with curly hair who wears a three-quarter length overcoat. He leans on a wall and gazes out over the scene, leaving it to the viewer to determine whether his intentions are malign or benevolent.
