Sacrifice
Artist: Warchol, Aleksandra · b. 1999
The piece was inspired by the artist's response to visual stimuli on her 2023 RSA John Kinross Scholarship to Italy; in particular a carved wooden statue of Christ crucified by an unidentified 16th century Florentine craftsman in the National Museum of Bargello.
The artist recorded in her sketchbook beneath her drawing of the carved statue; "Using this pose in one of my pieces about physical/ sexual abuse could be a good metaphor that guides the viewer to understand what's happening, without the need for explicit or brutal imagery.
It would remind the viewer of the physical and emotional pain of the abuse victim, as well as their unconditional love towards the partner - their willingness to sacrifice for the sake of making the relation[ship] work."
